The matchstick pole float is very much underestimated, in
its application, being a very small and light float; it can be used for
a variety of methods.
Canal fishing requires a very light approach on occasions
typically far shelf fishing. The matchstick float is an ideal tool for
this. Size of floats are about 2'' to 3'' long. A small fine balsa
float with a nylon bristle and a small wire base insert.
Because of the delicate float can its presentation of the
bait, this float can be used for far bank canal techniques, joker and
bloodworm, squat pinkie, and laying on the shelf with caster. The lightness of the float can help for
a natural presentation especially when the canal starts to tow, and by
letting the float drift naturally, can account for a lot of fish.
Slow sinking bait presentation lends this float to be
unbeatable, on clear canals and other Stillwater venues.
Whilst this float is an exceptional shallow water
float I have also developed this float for a method for fishing up in
the water on rivers. The idea came to me when fishing the Warwickshire
Avon a few years ago, their was a lot of dace to be caught up in the
water and on the drop, the waggler method was the norm, except a lot of
time was wasted with missed bites.
Using a 14-meter pole and this light matchstick float was
the answer, with a rig of the top two sections, and holding back this
float on the surface, the fish would hook them selves. Accounting for a
fish every put in. On some cases I would catch a big chub and easily
land it on the pole.
I have used this method
very successful on a variety rivers, Thames, Warwickshire Avon, Bristol
Avon, just to mention a couple, a method worth trying if you have
surface feeding fish on the river
and cannot hit the bites.
This type of float was only made by
Italian float making companies, now I am pleased to replicate the same
to the British Market.
