Reverse Pear

🪶 Reverse Pear Float

The Reverse Pear float is designed specifically for holding back against strong flows. Originally developed by French anglers for their big, powerful rivers like the Rhine, this design has since become a favourite of continental teams and home nation anglers alike.

The float’s wide body and tapered base give it excellent stability. As the surface water flows over the float, it creates less resistance, while the broad “shoulder” helps anchor the float in the swim. This allows the angler to hold back confidently without the float lifting or drifting out of position.

🎯 Key Features and Advantages

  • Ideal for holding back in flowing water

  • Wide shoulder design stabilises the float in the current

  • Water pressure holds the float down, preventing lift-out

  • Excellent for slow, controlled presentations

The eye position is critical on all pole floats. On the Reverse Pear, it’s placed just below the top of the body, giving the angler maximum control when holding back or lifting the float. The aerodynamic design makes it extremely responsive and easy to manage with the pole.

⚖️ Shotting and Presentation

This float works brilliantly when overshotted, allowing it to be held in a fixed position while keeping the bait pinned close to or on the bottom.

  • Perfect for laying on in steady or powerful flows

  • Can be shotted to just the base of the tip for slow running presentations

  • Produces positive, unmistakable bites

🧪 Build and Setup

  • Tip: Plastic or cane (I prefer interchangeable plastic tips, which can be swapped to match changing light conditions).

  • Base: Usually wire for extra stability in turbulent conditions, though cane works well in calmer water.

  • To secure the float on the line, I twist the line around the stem before sliding on the rubbers. This helps prevent slippage and reduces wear on fine silicone connectors.

In summary:

  • Purpose-built for holding back in strong flows

  • Wide-shouldered body for stability and control

  • Overshotting works exceptionally well with this design

  • Highly sensitive yet easy to control with the pole

  • Ideal for rivers and canals with moderate to heavy flow
