πͺΆ All Balsa Pole Float

The All Balsa pole float has grown steadily in popularity in recent years, with several British float makers β including Gold Medal Floats β now producing this robust and versatile float.
Its solid balsa construction makes it ideal for drifting canals, drains, slow-moving rivers, and even commercial carp pools. With an aerodynamic body shape, it can be used for both holding back and trotting steadily in the flow.
π§ͺ Design and Features
-
Material: 100 % balsa (body and tip)
-
Tip: Balsa tip for extra buoyancy and excellent visibility on long poles
-
Shape: Aerodynamic for smooth tracking in flow or tow
-
Shoulder: Designed to help hold up in moving water
-
Fittings: Some models come with quick-change adaptors, removing the need for an eye
This combination of buoyancy and strength makes the All Balsa float a great all-rounder, especially for caster and slow tow presentations.
π£ Techniques and Shotting
-
A good starting point is to set the float 12 inches over depth, with a couple of shots laying on.
-
In a tow, the buoyant balsa tip allows the float to slow down the bait effectively.
-
If the float starts to drag under, fine-tuning the shotting balance will regain the perfect presentation.
-
When the flow picks up, lay the float downstream of the shot β as the tow catches it, the bait will lift and move naturally, often triggering an instant take as the fish believes the bait is βescaping.β
πͺ Shotting Tips
-
Style leads are particularly effective:
-
Pinch them lightly with a style tool for easy sliding up and down the line.
-
Bunch for a bulk to get the bait down fast.
-
Spread for a slow-drop presentation.
-
-
Split shot also works well if used in small sizes:
-
Squeeze gently to keep them adjustable.
-
If a shot sticks, squeeze it in the opposite direction to free it.
-
π Tip: When shotting up, place your style shots on a strip of sticky tape, slot the line between the splits, then pinch them gently onto the line. This makes for a cleaner, more precise rig.

-
