🐉 THE BELMONT BOLY FLOAT

Having fished the Belmont stretch on the River Wye at Hereford for more than 40 years, I’ve watched countless river float designs come and go. I’ve tested most of them — and while many have been excellent, I eventually decided to design a float that worked perfectly for the Wye and for my own style of fishing.
I named it after my favourite venue: The Belmont Boly Float.
Built around the classic Avon shape, this float offers superb performance on deep, fast-flowing stretches. The design lends itself to instant presentation with the weight down, and when used with an olivette and swivel on the line, it allows for smooth retrieval across or mid-river without hook length twist or tangles. That means a clean presentation — every trot down.
One of this float’s biggest advantages is how well it handles line mending at distance. When striking, the shape of the float creates minimal splash and surface disturbance, so you don’t spook feeding fish beneath. This subtlety can make all the difference in pressured swims.
I’ve used the Belmont Boly Float to great success not only on the Wye at Belmont, but also on many of Britain’s great rivers — the Severn, Bristol Avon, Warwickshire Avon, Thames, Trent, and more.
The shotting pattern is simple: an olivette bulk down, a couple of dropper shots on the hook length, and a small swivel between. This clean, no-nonsense rig ensures the bait behaves naturally in the flow.
Below is an illustration showing the Belmont Boly Float rig — with olivette bulk, minimal droppers, and swivel for clean presentation.
The swivel also acts as a quick hook length change system, making it easy to switch between hooklengths to match feeding patterns or target species — especially useful when bites are coming thick and fast.
🎯 Clive’s Match Tip:
When fishing at distance, keep your rod high, mend the line gently, and let the float work for you. This float’s Avon profile lets you control the trot without overworking the rig.
