SURFACE FLOAT
πͺΆ Surface Float (Commercial Dibber)
The Surface Float, also known as the Commercial Dibber, is designed for fishing just below the surface β typically between 6β12 inches deep. Itβs a devastatingly effective method on commercial waters, especially for F1s, mirror carp, and silver fish, which eagerly intercept bait as it enters the water.
π― How Itβs Used
Surface fishing relies on creating competition among fish. By laying, slapping, or lifting the float as you feed little and often, you can bring the fish right up to the surface and trigger confident takes.
-
Hold the pole across your knees.
-
Feed a small number of pellets, casters, or maggots using a catapult.
-
Lift or slap the float as the feed hits the water.
-
Fish rush to the noise and movement, often hooking themselves on the take.
A simple βslapβ of the float without feeding can also trigger instant bites. The sound fools fish into believing new bait has arrived, creating feeding aggression and competition in the swim.
π§ Rigging and Depth Control
-
Keep multiple rigs ready at different depths or adjust by sliding the float up or down the line.
-
Surface floats are in-line, with the line threaded through the body via a fine needle β this prevents tangles when slapping or laying out the rig.
-
These floats are designed to handle constant action without damage.
-
Many anglers prefer to use no shot or minimal shotting, letting the bait weight settle the float naturally.
-
A hair-rigged banded pellet is a very effective setup for this style of fishing.
β In summary:
-
Designed for surface or shallow fishing (6β12″)
-
Ideal for F1s, carp, and silver fish
-
Line-through body prevents tangles and damage
-
Excellent for βslappingβ and triggering competitive feeding
-
Best used with minimal shotting and light rigs
