WIDE BASE

🪶 Extra Wide Base Float

The Extra Wide Base pole float is designed for maximum stability, making it an excellent choice for small canals and stillwaters — particularly when there’s a chop or ripple on the surface. Its broad base helps prevent unwanted movement, ensuring a clean, steady presentation of the bait.

🧪 Key Design Benefits

  • Wide base increases float stability in surface chop and light drift

  • Best used with: bulk-down shotting and light droppers

  • Ideal venues: small canals, lakes, and other stillwaters

  • Excellent for both whip and pole-to-hand methods

When there’s surface movement, this float’s shape keeps the tip still, helping to avoid bobbing or lifting that can spook fish or create false bites.

🪵 Stem Material and Behaviour

The stem material plays a major role in how the float behaves in the water:

  • 🪙 Wire – Adds weight and stability, helps half-cock the float with less shot.

    • ⚠️ Can bend easily when sliding the float. Always pull the silicone rubbers down first.

    • Tip: Twisting the line around the wire stem can help prevent float slippage.

  • 🪶 Carbon – Lightweight, strong, less prone to bending. Excellent for small floats.

  • 🌿 Cane – Adds extra weight capacity, perfect for a slow-sinking presentation and robust use.

  • 🧪 Plastic or Fine Fibreglass – Offers neutral buoyancy and helps cock larger floats smoothly.

🎣 Practical Use on the Bank

  • When fishing close in or with a whip, a wire bristle gives superb sensitivity.

  • For further out fishing, a cane or nylon bristle works best.

  • The wide base stops the float bobbing in the ripple, allowing precise presentation even in tricky surface conditions.

Many continental match anglers prefer to make their floats up at home, use them once, and discard them after a match. By contrast, British anglers often re-use rigs again and again. While both approaches have their merits, thinking more like the continental teams can sometimes lead to improved presentation and results.

In summary:

  • Extra wide base = extra stability in surface chop

  • Ideal for small canals and stillwaters

  • Works beautifully with bulk-down shotting and light droppers

  • Multiple stem options to suit presentation style

  • Trusted by match anglers for both whip and pole methods
